What is Sport Premium funding?
The PE and Sport Premium is a ring-fenced government grant provided to English primary schools. It is designed to make additional, sustainable improvements to the quality of physical education, sports, and extracurricular activities. The funding is intended to ensure all children have equal access to sports.
Why have schools been given Sports Premium funding?
Each year, the government provides funding to primary schools to be spent on improving the quality of sport and Physical Education (PE) for school children. The sport funding can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools. Examples of activities this type of funding covers are:
· hire qualified sports coaches to work with teachers
· provide existing staff with training or resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively
· introduce new sports or activities and encourage more pupils to take up sport
· support and involve the least active children by running or extending school sports clubs, holiday clubs and Change4Life clubs
· run sport competitions · increase pupils’ participation in the School Games
· run sports activities with other schools.
Sport Premium funding changes
The sports premium funding 2026 – 2027 will be replaced by the new PE and School Sport Partnership Network, which will provide targeted support to schools based on their needs. The funding will be distributed over seven school terms, not three full years and will include a one off £100 million payment to support primary schools during the transition year. The new model aims to modernise the school sport partnerships approach and ensure that all children have access to equal opportunities for physical activity. At Brookside, we will continue to ensure high quality PE and sports provision alongside this new model.
