Perfect Pots

This week, we have had lots of fun making our own pots out of black and orange card. Ask your child about it and what they have learnt about pots from the ancient Greek era.

Here are some of them - They were all fantastic and we were very impressed!

Community Spirit

Last Friday, on Friday 6th March, Year 5 had some more very special visitors. Cllr Loydell came back to see us along with some more important visitors, including some gentlemen from our local Police Force and our local Youth Offending Service. They all had the opportunity to talk to our children about what their specific roles are and what they do on a day-to-day basis. They also talked about what anti-social behaviour is and how we should be more mindful of others within our community. They also spoke to the children about how each of them ended up in the jobs they are in - as in what education they had.

They have left us with a very important task; we have to produce anti-social behaviour posters. The best one will win a competition and receive a prize for Year 5. The children have been very busy working on their posters. We will take photos of some of them and put them on here at a later date.

All of the  children and staff thoroughly enjoyed the morning, especially the close up look at a real-life police van! We would like to say a special thanks to all of our visitors, thank you for coming and talking to us. Moreover, Year 5 would also like to say an extra special thank you to Mrs Dave for organizing the whole event - thank you Mrs Dave!

The adults in Year 5 would also like to say well done to the fabulous children. Our visitors were very impressed with their attitudes towards learning and thought that they asked some excellent questions. Super work guys!

If you have time, please ask your child about their morning and what they have learnt about anti-social behaviour.

Mock Trial at Brookside!

On Wednesday 26th February, the Year 5 children had two very special visitors, Magistrates Martin Pantling and Phil Woolnough. They are local magistrates in Leicester. The children were very enthusiastic to learn about their specific duties and how they help the community. Once they had explained what their roles were, we had the fantastic opportunity to witness a mock trial. Some of the children got the chance to get into character and perform as a legal adviser/solicitor or as a witness. These children were fantastic in their various roles and were fully engaged. All of the children got to discuss and decide a verdict together. Once we had reached a verdict, the Magistrates then discussed the various punishments that could be imposed upon people found guilty by them.

It was really interesting learning about the different punishments that the magistrates can give. We also looked at different crimes that can happen. Can you spot the different crimes?

Greek Performance

In Year 5 we have reading different Greek myths this week. The children have really enjoyed hearing different stories about different heroes and beasts. Today, we re-enacted the story of 'Theseus and the Minotaur'. They produced a series of freeze frames thinking about their facial expressions and posture. Here are some of those freeze frames.

Welcome Back!

Happy New Year to all of our Year 5 children and parents! We hope you have had a wonderful break and are ready for the term ahead. This term we are looking forward to learning all about the Greeks and Forces in Science. In Maths, we will be focussing on fractions, decimals and percentages. Please make sure your child knows their times tables, it will be really useful for them this term.

We look forward to this term and to continue working with you in helping your child flourish!

Parliament Week

This week in Year 5, we have been looking at how laws are made in this country. This is all because this week it is Parliament Week in England. We looked at how democracy works and how certain things have changed over time. For e.g. some of the children did not know that just over a 100 years ago, women were not allowed to vote. We also had a great debate on the monarchy. In groups, we thought about reasons for and against having a monarchy. Ask your child what their thoughts are?

Diwali Celebrations

On Friday 2nd November, we had our Diwali celebration day. All the children had a great day. We did some special Diwali activities and had some special food. Thank you to those of you who bought in some food to share, and to the parents that came in to see their children. We really appreciate all of your help and support.

PSHE - Beating Racism!

This week, in Year 5, we have been looking at racism and how it can affect people. We all agreed how it was wrong and that people should not be judged just because they look different. The children came up with some very thoughtful comments. We designed our own ribbons to help tackle racism.

Perfect Printing!

This week, we have been investigating printing. We have looked at different materials we can use. In Year 5, we have used potatoes to print out a section of our fingerprints. We had to carve out the pattern, then using paint, print out the pattern. We all enjoyed working with potatoes. Have a look at some of our patterns.

Fingerprint Fun!

In Year 5 we have been learning about fingerprints. We have learnt how no two people have the same fingerprints. We have investigated how they help us to identify people. This week we have produced some art work based upon the patterns in our fingerprints. Ask your child about what they have learnt.

Trip to The National Space Centre

On Tuesday 17th September, Year 5 enjoyed an exciting trip to The Space Centre. We explored interactive exhibits, climbed the Rocket Tower and a journey through the solar system in the planetarium. It was a great day and everyone learnt lots.

Welcome Back!

The Year 5 want to welcome our new Year 5 classes to Upper Key Stage 2. The children have made a fabulous start and we have jumped straight into learning and exploring. Watch this space for news and updates.

Eagles and Falcons

This year the Year Fives will be learning about a wide and diverse curriculum:

Term 1 Term 2 Term 3
  • Space

  • Forces

  • Crime and Punishment

  • Our local area

  • Ancient Greeks
  • Solids, Liquids and Gases

  • Coastlines

  • Life Cycles

  • Transition

The Eagles and Falcons try hard to follow the golden rules that we use throughout school.

We are kind and helpful

We show respect

We look after property

We work hard

We are gentle

We are honest

We listen carefully

We know that these are the rules for life.

We try very hard in Year 5 to further our social, moral, spiritual and cultural understanding. This is done throughout whole school day in a variety of ways but especially through assemblies, 'Thought of the Day', R-Time and Seal. We are also very lucky at Brookside to be able to celebrate different religious festivals during our celebration days.
